The Great American Eclipse is upon us.  On Monday, August 21st we will witness the first total solar eclipse to sweep across the entire country since 1918.  In anticipation of this historic event, the Metropolitan Library System collaborated with Science Museum Oklahoma to provide a series of programs to explain what causes eclipses, how to view them safely, and teach people how to build a camera obscura that they can use to view the eclipse.  Thanks to a grant from STAR_Net Libraries the library locations offering the

Sir Jamie Lannister as a POP character image

Any fan of the epic television saga, Game of Thrones, realizes that music plays an enormous part in the success of the series. The jaw-dropping and fateful opening sequence of last season's penultimate episode was all but carried by Ramin Djawadi's gothic minimalist cue, "Light of the Seven." But his massively successful score is not the only musical aspect of the show.

"You work for the library? Must be nice to just read books all day."

I've heard that so many times and it's just not true! We are too busy working to read. But I love to hit the library on my day off to check out a nice big pile of fun books and movies.

Then I go home, fire up some popcorn, and party down!

Mr. Burns election posters

From well-rehearsed public weeping sessions to extravagant book burnings to bloody campaigns of suppression against opposition movements, despots throughout history have utilized a number of deplorable strategies to manipulate, connive and censor their way to the top. Fuelled by hate, incapable of forming normal human relationships and unwilling to listen to dissenting voices, these tyrants personified the perfect mélange of charm and delightfulness. With ruthless abandon, each, in their own way, sacrificed the interests of their respective subjects to achieve and maintain absolute power.

Graphic Novel Nostalgia

graphic novels on display

Well, folks, it’s time for another round of graphic novels. I must admit that up until my recent vacation I have not been reading very much, maybe it’s the heat of the summer or that I’ve been binge watching too much TV, or that my brain has just been far too distracted to concentrate on words on a page (it’s that one). BUT luckily, on the way out of town, stuck on an airplane with a stack of books, I finally found my Zen reading zone again, up amongst the lofty sun filled cotton ball clouds.

Let’s Get Timey Wimey

time machine train with a witch directing the machine

Time travel is a fascinating thing. H. G. Wells first popularized the concept in his 1895 novel The Time Machine. Einstein even theorized that it was possible, but only in one direction. You could go forward in time, but you couldn’t go back. That doesn’t stop talented writers with coming up with a seemingly endless variety of plots involving time travel, and I love them.
